Penalties Undo USA Against England

Penalties and a lack of possession were the problems for the USA against England. The Eagles conceded penalties that directly led to England’s first three tries, and they rarely saw the ball for more than a phase or two.

England struck first midway through the first half when the United States got caught flat footed on defense after a long period of trying to hold off a score, and Alex Gray dotted down. The back breaker was a penalty on Zac Mizell for side entry at the breakdown.

England scored again following another side entry penalty, this one by Nick Edwards. It gave England a high-percentage penalty play inside the attacking 22 that resulted in a James Rodwell try.

The Eagles had the ball and were working through a few phases when time expired in the first half, but a penalty for diving over at the ruck gave the ball back to England, and Marcus Watson put the USA down 21 going into intermission with a converted score.

England put the game completely out of reach a couple of minutes into the second half. Brett Thompson knocked on the USA’s first possession since the break, England won the scrum, and Watson easily sliced between Tomasin and Test before offloading to Tom Mitchell for the try.

The USA’s only score came familiarly, from Carlin Isles well after the game was in hand. Isles was subbed on between halftime and England’s fourth try.

The Eagles will be playing Canada for pride and a better draw in the Bowl Quarterfinals in their final pool game of the day. Both are 0-2 entering the contest.
